In this battle the young Afonso Henriques fought the forces of his mother, the reigning Queen D. Teresa, for control of the kingdom of Portugal. São Teotónio was a supporter of the young infante, and was rumored to have excommunicated his mother for refusing to relinquish her throne. He subsequently became a trusted advisor to the king.
