This church was founded during the reign of Afonso Henriques, in 1154 and disputes with Santa Maria de Marvila the honor of being the oldest Christian church in the city. It was constructed on the site of the ‘Alcáçova’, the fortified citadel in which was located the royal palace of Afonso Henriques.
