The Battle of Ourique took place on 25 July 1139. The forces of Afonso Henriques defeated the army of governor of Córdoba, Muhammad Az-Zubayr Ibn Umar. Despite the fact that the Portuguese forces were outnumbered, Afonso Henriques’s army won the battle and he was subsequently proclaimed King Afonso I. Legend states that during the course of the battle Afonso and his troops vanquished and slayed five Muslim kings.
