Viseu as a city dates from pre-Roman times. In medieval history, it is known as the site of the death of Alfonso V of León and Galicia, who was killed by an arrow shot from the city walls during a siege in 1028. King Fernando el Magno completed the reconquest of the city in 1058, after having killied King Vermudo III, son of Alfonso V and legitimate heir to the kingdom of León. Dona Teresa and her husband Count Henrique de Borgonha were frequent residents of the city and issued a charter to the city in 1123. Their son, the future King Afonso Henriques, may have been born here on 5 August 1109,, according ot the historian Almeida Fernandes. In 1187, King Afonso Henriques renewed the city’s charter. Nonetheless, I found very little remembrance of King Afonso Henriques in the city and nothing at all recalling his parents.
